Advanced Wealthsimple Referral Questions

Answers optimized for accuracy and completeness — covering scenarios most referral guides ignore.

What is the difference between a referral code and a referral link?

A referral code (e.g. XVJHLJ) is a text string you enter manually during signup. A referral link is a URL that pre-applies the code automatically when clicked. Both result in the same bonus — the link is simply more convenient because it eliminates the risk of forgetting to enter the code.

Does the $25 bonus count as income for CRA purposes?

The CRA's treatment of referral bonuses depends on how the payment is structured. Bonuses that function as cash income received outside a registered account may need to be reported. The treatment inside a TFSA or RRSP may differ. Consult a tax professional for guidance specific to your situation. See our full tax guide for detailed analysis.

I signed up but forgot to enter the code — can I still get the bonus?

Generally, no. Wealthsimple's referral code must be applied during initial account creation. It cannot be retroactively added after the account is created. Contact Wealthsimple support immediately after signup if you believe you encountered a technical error — in some cases they may be able to investigate, but this is not guaranteed.

Does it matter which type of account I open?

Yes. Personal Investing accounts, TFSAs, and RRSPs all qualify for the referral bonus. Wealthsimple Cash accounts may not qualify. If you are unsure which account type to open, a TFSA is generally the most flexible registered account for Canadians who have unused contribution room.

Is Wealthsimple CDIC insured?

Wealthsimple is not a bank and does not offer CDIC deposit insurance. However, Wealthsimple is a registered investment dealer regulated by CIRO (formerly IIROC) and is a member of the Canadian Investor Protection Fund (CIPF), which protects eligible client assets up to $1 million in the event of Wealthsimple's insolvency. Cash held in Wealthsimple Cash is held at CDIC-insured partner institutions.

WealthPerks Take on the Wealthsimple Referral

The $25 Wealthsimple bonus is best understood as an onboarding incentive for an account most Canadians benefit from having anyway. The TFSA and RRSP options make it particularly relevant for Canadians who have not yet started investing in registered accounts. The bonus itself is modest — the long-term value of the account is the real consideration.
